Planning to move house in the near future? Here are five mistakes to avoid so that your move goes as smoothly as possible.

    Doing it alone

It’s possible to hire a van and move your possessions yourself. However, if you’ve got a lot of possessions, you could take days to move them all. There may even be some items like furniture and appliances that are dangerous to carry alone. Hiring professional movers as found at sites like https://www.mybekins.com/location/wilkes-barre-pa-movers/ will help to make the process faster, while also ensuring that heavy and fragile items are handled with care. Even if you can’t afford a moving company, you should at least try asking friends and family to help speed up the move.

    Packing last minute

You may be able to get away packing last minute for a vacation, but when it comes to moving home, you don’t want to be still packing items into boxes on moving day. Make sure to start the packing process a few weeks in advance so that you can tackle it in an organized manner.

    Taking stuff you don’t need

Moving home is the perfect opportunity to declutter. Don’t take items with you that you don’t want to keep – sort these into bags that can be taken to the dump or your local charity store. You may even be able to sell items for cash such as clothes and toys. Sites such as https://www.shpock.com/en-gb/c/home-garden are great for selling unwanted items. Alternatively, you may be able to throw a yard sale or take items to a second-hand store in your area.

    Not hiring a babysitter/pet-sitter

Moving day could be a hazardous environment for your kids and pets as there will be lots of heavy items being carried around. Consider hiring someone to look after your kids and pets on moving day so that you can focus on co-ordinating the move. You may be able to get friends and family to do this, or you could consider hiring a babysitter/pet-sitter.

Forgetting to notify the right people

You may need to tell certain people about your move in advance such as insurance and loan providers so that your bills are directed to your new address. It could even damage your credit score if certain providers or your bank is still registered with an old address. Meanwhile, having a driver’s license registered to an old address could even be illegal. Use sites such as https://www.iammoving.com/ to go through a checklist of all the people that need to be notified. Obviously, you should also notify friends and family members, especially those who live far away and who may still send birthday or holiday cards.
