There’s a particular kind of afternoon that many parents over 35 can still recall vividly: no plan, no device, just a stretch of hours to fill however you liked. You’d wander outside, negotiate with neighborhood kids over the rules of some invented game, and come home covered in dirt with something new figured out about the world. Nobody called it “skill development.” It was just childhood.
That version of growing up is becoming genuinely rare. Generation Z, born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s, and Generation Alpha, born between 2010 and 2024, grew up in an environment defined by touch devices, with the spread of smartphones from 2007 onward marking those born since as the so-called Screen Generation. What’s worth pausing on isn’t whether technology is good or bad in the abstract, but rather which specific capacities children once built almost effortlessly – and how those pathways are quietly narrowing.
Tolerating Boredom and Finding Their Own Entertainment

Far from being a waste of time, boredom is a state that pushes the brain to seek stimuli, solutions, and new forms of entertainment. Before a phone could instantly fill any gap with a video or a game, children faced those idle stretches and had to work through them. That friction was productive.
This process activates divergent thinking, a crucial aspect of innovation and creative problem-solving. Boredom is often the impetus for kids to use their imagination and creativity, but if this boredom is consistently placated by passive screen time, we may be missing some of those opportunities. The ability to self-entertain without prompts is, in practical terms, the seed of self-direction in adult life.
Imaginative and Unstructured Play

During free play, children increase their imagination and creativity, organize their own games, develop their own rules, learn problem-solving skills, and practice leadership. None of those outcomes come with instructions. They emerge naturally when children are simply left to fill a space with whatever they can imagine.
A wealth of research shows that unstructured play, play that isn’t organized or directed by adults and that generally doesn’t have a defined purpose or outcome, is a fundamental necessity for children to thrive physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially. From an early age, the possibility to experience several opportunities for unstructured play, in which the child can decide what to do, with whom and how, promotes positive self-esteem, autonomy, and confidence.
Face-to-Face Social Negotiation

Outdoor play offers opportunities for children to engage in unstructured social interactions, learn conflict resolution, and develop crucial social skills. These moments, whether arguing over the rules of a backyard game or deciding who gets the last turn on the swing, were daily rehearsals for navigating human relationships.
Excessive screen media use can undermine peer relationships, face-to-face interactions, family bonds, and academic performance. Overreliance on digital communication can hinder face-to-face social skills development. The concern isn’t that children talk less overall – it’s that the texture of real-time, in-person negotiation is hard to replicate through a screen.
Physical Risk-Taking and Body Awareness

The healthiest type of play is unsupervised, outdoor play with peers that involves sporadic risk-taking. Climbing a tree, for example, may stimulate anxiety, but by doing it anyway children develop physical skills, resilience, problem-solving abilities, and a sense of accomplishment that helps them face future risks and obstacles with greater confidence.
Through risky play, children have the opportunity to become more independent, confident, and resilient, and learn important self-regulation skills. Researchers have also suggested that engagement in risky play can offer the opportunity for children to navigate uncertainty and coping, leading to decreased anxiety over time. The rise in screen time among children under five has raised concerns about its association with motor development, including gross and fine motor skills.
Language Development Through Real Conversation

Learning, language development, and self-regulation skills among children aged zero to five are of particular interest to researchers and clinicians, as these skills foreshadow important outcomes across the lifespan. Language is built in conversation, in back-and-forth exchanges that require listening, waiting, and responding in real time.
Excessive screen time has raised concerns regarding its potential impact on neurodevelopment, particularly on fine motor, language, and social skills that rely on direct human interaction and play. Background television, even when not directly attended to, reduces caregiver responsiveness and distracts children from play. Children who get fewer of those conversational turns early on tend to start at a disadvantage that can follow them into school.
Sustained Attention and the Ability to Focus

Fast-paced or overstimulating content, like action-filled video games or rapid-fire cartoons, has been associated with reduced attention span and difficulty focusing on sustained tasks. Before the era of endless scroll and autoplay, a child’s attention was trained on slower things: a book, a puzzle, a long game of pretend that took an entire afternoon to play out.
Early and unsupervised media use can affect attention span, self-regulation, and interactive behaviors, all of which are foundational for later cognitive and social competence. Extensive screen time in children as young as one has been linked to cognitive development delays. Research suggests a correlation between higher screen time at age one and later cognitive delays in communication and problem-solving. Attention, it turns out, is a muscle that needs resistance to grow.
Emotional Resilience and Self-Regulation

Active play like backyard games helps build healthy bodies, increase energy, and reduce tension and anxiety. Risky, challenging play like jumping from manageable heights helps children learn to make decisions, calibrate risks, and manage emotions. Losing a game in person, feeling left out of a group, or failing at something physical and trying again were all low-stakes lessons in handling discomfort.
Overuse of screens can lead to emotional instability, affective dysregulation, reduced attention span, and increased anxiety symptoms in children. Excessive use of technology can negatively affect toddlers, including delayed language development, poor social skills, and behavioral problems. The world has always asked children to regulate themselves; what’s changed is how much they’re being handed a shortcut to avoid the practice altogether.
None of this is an argument for a screen-free childhood or a romanticized return to some simpler time. The evidence, though, is consistent enough to take seriously: certain capacities develop best through friction, boredom, real conversation, and the kind of play that nobody planned. Those things haven’t disappeared, but they do require more deliberate protection than they once did.
