There’s something unsettling about standing in your kitchen right now, isn’t there? You probably feel safe surrounded by familiar tools and appliances you’ve used for years. Yet some of these everyday items are increasingly under scrutiny by regulators, health officials, and environmental groups who say they pose genuine risks to your wellbeing or the planet. The movement to restrict or even ban common kitchen gadgets is gaining momentum across multiple states, and what starts as local legislation often spreads nationwide.
We’re not talking about obscure specialty tools here. These are items sitting on your countertop, tucked in your drawers, or hanging on your walls right this moment. From the stove you cook on to the pans you grab without thinking, regulatory changes coming down the pipeline could fundamentally alter how American kitchens function. Let’s dive into the eight everyday kitchen essentials that might not be around much longer.
Gas Stoves Face Mounting Pressure

The gas stove debate exploded into the mainstream in early 2023 when a Consumer Product Safety Commission official suggested banning them might be on the table. Though the CPSC quickly backtracked, a commissioner had raised the possibility of a ban on gas stoves in January 2023, sparking intense political controversy. While the CPSC chair and the White House both reportedly said they did not support such a ban, the conversation didn’t end there.
The Department of Energy locked in a rule on cooking appliances, including gas stoves, which will be implemented in January 2028 after being announced in January 2024. The good news for gas stove enthusiasts? The final regulations primarily target electric models, of which 77% on the market comply compared to 97% of gas stoves, with just 3% of gas models needing to increase efficiency. Still, the momentum toward restricting gas appliances continues at the state level.
New York became the first state to ban natural gas in May 2023 by updating its building codes, requiring all-electric heating and cooking in new buildings under seven stories by 2026 and in 2029 for larger buildings. California’s Berkeley initially led the charge with a 2019 ban, though the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit overturned Berkeley’s ban in 2023, and on January 2, 2024, the Ninth Circuit denied Berkeley’s request for review. Despite these setbacks, the push to phase out gas continues, with health concerns about indoor air pollution driving much of the advocacy.
Non-Stick Cookware Containing PFAS

If you’ve got a Teflon pan, pay attention. Minnesota became the first state to ban the sale of nonstick cookware coated with PFAS as of January 1, 2025. These so-called “forever chemicals” have been found to persist in the environment and human bodies for decades. The concern isn’t just theoretical either.
Colorado and Maine were set to ban PFAS in cookware beginning in January 2026, while Connecticut passed legislation to do the same starting in January 2028, and Vermont recently revised a law pushing back its ban from 2026 to 2028. California nearly joined them when lawmakers approved Senate Bill 682 in a 41-19 vote in September 2025, though the governor ultimately vetoed it. Still, the trend is clear.
What makes PFAS problematic? In nonstick cookware, PFAS can produce toxic fumes at high temperatures and can get into food if the coating wears down. Honestly, the industry argues that fluoropolymers have been shown for decades to be inert and non-harmful, and the FDA has authorized PTFE and other fluoropolymers for use in food-contact applications since the 1960s, reaffirming that PTFE in nonstick coatings remains approved as recently as early 2025. Yet environmental groups remain unconvinced, pointing to pollution from manufacturing facilities and potential health risks that researchers are still untangling.
Plastic Cutting Boards

Here’s something that might make you rethink tonight’s meal prep. Research published in 2023 revealed some disturbing findings about plastic cutting boards. Cutting carrots on a plastic board can generate as much as 15 particles of microplastics per cut, or about 50 grams per year, roughly equivalent to the weight of ten plastic credit cards.
One recent study called plastic cutting boards a “potentially significant source of microplastics in human food” and found that a polyethylene chopping board could shed between 7.4 and 50.7 grams of microplastics per person per year. That’s a lot of plastic ending up in your body. Microplastics have been found in human lungs, blood and even in the placenta, though scientists are still working to understand the full health implications.
While no outright bans have been proposed yet, the research is prompting many home cooks and professional chefs to switch to wooden or bamboo alternatives. Some chefs have switched from plastic cutting boards to wooden alternatives, with one chef using wooden ones instead. Let’s be real, though: the convenience and affordability of plastic boards mean they’ll likely remain popular until regulations force a change or conclusive health data emerges.
Aluminum Foil for High-Heat Cooking

Wrapping your salmon or potatoes in aluminum foil seems harmless enough, doesn’t it? Research suggests otherwise when it comes to high-heat cooking. Studies show leakage of aluminum to food that was baked in aluminum foil, and research indicates that excessive consumption of food prepared by baking in aluminum foil can carry a health risk.
The European Council specified that the specific release limit for aluminum to food should not exceed 5.00 mg/kg of food. The problem gets worse with certain foods. Research shows that cooking aluminum at high temperatures and the use of acidic foods, salt and spices perpetuated a greater amount of leaching of the mineral.
The good news? When put to the test, there was leakage of aluminum from the foil to food, but the amount was so small that it would be more of an issue for small children or those suffering from diminished kidney function. Experts increasingly recommend using parchment paper for high-temperature applications above 400 degrees Fahrenheit. While aluminum foil isn’t facing an imminent ban, growing awareness of its risks is changing recommendations from food safety authorities, and that could eventually translate to restrictions.
Electric Kitchen Appliances with Internal PFAS Components

It’s not just pans that contain forever chemicals. Coffee makers, waffle irons, and other electric kitchen appliances often contain PFAS in internal components like valves and seals. Air fryers are considered cookware under Minnesota’s law if they include a component such as a pan, baking sheet, tray, or grill that has a nonstick coating containing intentionally added PFAS.
Under Minnesota’s 2025 PFAS law, no cookware or certain products that contain intentionally added PFAS may be sold, offered for sale or distributed in Minnesota after December 31, 2024. Here’s the thing: many consumers don’t realize their supposedly PFAS-free appliances still contain these chemicals in non-cooking components. The definitions vary by state, creating confusion for manufacturers and consumers alike.
An example given of a cookware product that is not included under the ban is an electric coffee machine, though that exemption could change. As states refine their legislation and close loopholes, expect more electric appliances to face scrutiny. The kitchen gadget industry is watching these developments closely, knowing that broader bans could fundamentally reshape their product lines.
Old Scratched Plastic Storage Containers

That collection of mismatched plastic containers in your cupboard? They might be a bigger problem than you think, especially the old ones with scratches. A 2023 study published in Environmental Science & Technology found that using a plastic cutting board can create between 1,536 and 7,680 small flecks of plastic, which can get onto your knife and into your food, and the same principle applies to degraded plastic containers.
Experts recommend not using or reheating plastic storage containers or takeout containers, as heat promotes the release of more microplastics. The combination of scratches, wear, and heat creates the perfect storm for microplastic contamination. Exposure to plastics, often at surprisingly low thresholds, is linked to greater risk of adverse health outcomes like stroke and heart attack.
I know it sounds crazy, but switching to glass or stainless steel containers isn’t just a trendy wellness move anymore. It’s becoming a legitimate health precaution based on emerging science. While governments haven’t moved to ban plastic food storage containers yet, the mounting evidence suggests it’s only a matter of time before consumer protection agencies start issuing warnings or restrictions, particularly for reheating food.
Ceramic-Coated Cookware with Undisclosed Additives

You might have switched to ceramic cookware thinking you’d dodged the PFAS bullet. I hate to break it to you, but ceramic isn’t always the safe harbor it appears to be. A study published in April 2025 found that the non-stick performance of ceramic coatings was inferior to that of PTFE-based coatings, with the lowest performing ceramic cookware requiring nearly 9 times more force than a PTFE-coated pan after 90 cooking cycles.
More concerning is what some manufacturers add to ceramic coatings to improve performance. PTFE itself is a type of PFAS, so even some “ceramic” or “PFAS-free” cookware may contain it. The labeling regulations vary dramatically by state, creating a patchwork of requirements that confuse consumers. Some ceramic cookware contains heavy metals like lead or cadmium in the glazing, particularly cheaper imports.
Beginning on January 1, 2025, several states banned the sale or distribution of certain products that contain intentionally added PFAS, including cookware, and by January 1, 2026, even more states joined. The challenge with ceramic cookware is enforcement. Testing every product for undisclosed additives remains difficult, and regulators are still catching up to the rapidly evolving market of “alternative” non-stick solutions.
Aluminum Cookware for Acidic Foods

Plain aluminum pots and pans have fallen out of favor in recent years, yet many people still use them regularly. The research on aluminum cookware raises red flags. Regular use of aluminum cookware correlates with elevated aluminum levels in the blood, increased free radical damage to body fats and proteins, compromised antioxidant capacity, and higher rates of DNA damage.
The risk amplifies dramatically with certain foods. Cooking or storing acidic foods like tomato sauce or yogurt in aluminum cookware can exacerbate aluminum leaching, emphasizing the importance of avoiding such practices, particularly for daily use. We’re talking about everyday cooking scenarios here, not some obscure edge case. Think about making marinara sauce or storing leftovers.
According to the CDC, aluminum pots and pans aren’t considered harmful; however, if you frequently cook acidic food in aluminum pots, you may be exposed to higher levels of aluminum compared to someone who uses pots made out of other materials. While studies have failed to confirm any role for aluminum in causing Alzheimer’s disease according to the Alzheimer’s Association, the oxidative stress and DNA damage findings are concerning enough on their own. Don’t expect an outright ban, but increasingly specific usage guidelines and warnings seem inevitable.
The kitchen is changing whether we like it or not. Regulators are catching up to decades of scientific research revealing that convenience sometimes comes with hidden costs. These eight gadgets represent just the beginning of what could be a significant shift in how we equip and use our kitchens. Some of these items will likely disappear from stores within the next few years, while others will face increasingly strict usage guidelines and warning labels.
