With people planning road trip this Spring, many people are thinking about where they can go and what they can see. While some pet owners have it arranged so that they can hit the road and leave their fur babies at home, happily with a pet sitter, some people are planning on taking their pups on the road with them. That is great when you can do it, and it can be done safely. I get it. It is super cute seeing the dog with his head out the window, and having your dog with you while you are going for long walks on trails, or even just to visit a friend. But please keep in mind, this is only a good thing when the dog is safe.

Never leave your pet in the car. Do not leave you dog or cat, or any animal alone in the car. Even if does not feel hot outside, the car can be extremely hot. A mid 70-degree day can quickly become temperatures in the triple digits. A dog let in these conditions can suffer serious illness or even death.

No distractions. There should be no petting your pets while driving. No taking pictures. No giving them treats or food. And not having pets climb on your laps. Do not let pets distract you while you are driving.

Consider Pet Safety Restraints. Safety restraint in people, like seat belts and car seats, are to make sure that if there is an accident, you are safe and secure. Safety restraints for pets serve the same purpose. First is a pet is involved in a car accident and is not restrained, he can be thrown around the car and seriously injured. The pet can also be thrown into the passengers of the can and act like a flying projectile. Besides an accident, when pets move around the car, they can be a distraction. They can climb on you and then be the cause of the accident. Make sure to get a restraint that is the right size for your pet.
