Technology is a great thing: it allows you to stay connected to all of the important things in your life like friends and family no matter where you are or where you are going. But sometimes, all those beeps, pings and bells coming from your cell phone and other devices can be distracting, taking away from your work or your enjoyment of life.
Don’t let technology rule you. Use it to stay current and informed, but don’t forget to take some time for yourself. Here are a few guidelines that can help you tame the technology in your life and get more out of your day.
Fight Technology With Technology
If you don’t think you have the willpower to fight technology distractions yourself throughout your day, then there are programs and applications that can help you.
If you can’t force yourself to quit visiting websites rather than working, plugins and extensions like SimpleBlocker can do it for you. All you have to do is choose a list of websites that you don’t want to be able visit, set a timer for how long you want the ban to continue, and then use your password to set the lock. You will not be able to access those websites until the timer is up.
There are other plugins out there that do the same thing for different browsers, so do a quick internet search and you are bound to find one.
Lessen Your Availability
It may seem like an odd thing, but just because you have the ability to be constantly connected doesn’t mean that you need to be.
Before cell phones and other mobile devices, your day was, for the most part, separated into distinct parts: you woke up and got the kids ready for school; you went to work; you came home from work. Now, these can blend together, with work calling or emailing you at home or your family doing the same while you are at work.
If this is a problem for you, then you need to fix it. Let the company you work for know that you don’t want to be disturbed unless it’s an emergency. Tell your family the same thing for when you are at work.
Turn it Off!
If technology is distracting you, then you can always...turn it off. It’s that simple.
When you’re driving, you probably do not need to have your phone on at all times. Most vehicles like the Jeep Patriot come equipped with GPS, so you don’t have to use your phone for that. When you are with your friends or family, turn it off so you actually enjoy the time with them. Tablets and computers can be turned off as well to help you resist the urge to reach for them.
It is no secret that many people are addicted to their devices. If you are and you want to end the distractions that come with it, try these simple things and see what happens. You might get more stuff done!
