The low temperatures of winter can be very hard of an engine. It is extremely important to make sure the engine has the right amount and ratio of antifreeze. The antifreeze in the radiator system protect teh engine. It keeps the engine from over heating when it is running and keeps it from freezing in the winter. It is very important that the ration of the antifreeze/coolant is 50/50. 50% water to 50% antifreeze. This gives the most amount of protection from boiling and freezing. Most store bought antifreeze is already premixed, ready to go.

Antifreeze should be checked several times a year. It should also be changed every 2 to 3 years. Each manufacture has its own recommendations, so be sure to check your user manual to see what they recommend. If the antifreeze/coolant is often low, even after being filled, it is likely that you have a leak. The leak can be in the radiator itself, but is usually in one of the hoses or clamps. Be sure to have the leak fixed so that you do not cause damage to the engine. Know how to check your antifreeze levels. Tips from Fiat USA of Lehigh Valley.

    How to check your antifreeze/coolant:
It is not hard to check the antifreeze/coolant on your car. Unlike checking the oil or transmission fluid, it is something that you can see just by looking.
Start by making sure your car is cool. Do not start when the car if hot. The steam that can come out, is extremely dangerous. Open the hood of the car and look for a plastic tank, with wave symbols on the lid. This holds the antifreeze.
On the side of the tank, there will be lines that mark the level of the coolant. You want the level of the liquid to be at the full line. If it is below the cool level line, you will need to add antifreeze.
Open the lid to the reservoir. After taking the lid off of the antifreeze, slowly pour it into the reservoir until it reaches the cool level line. Be careful not to spill the antifreeze. Use a funnel if needed.
If you suspect a leak, be sure to check the levels often. You do not want to run the engine without enough coolant.
