If you’re a cat parent, you’ve likely watched your furry friend knock things off shelves, zoom through the house at 2 a.m., or stare at you like you’re the crazy one. But guess what? Science might finally have an explanation for their wild behavior—your cat might be a little bit of a psychopath. And you’re definitely not alone.

A recent study out of the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University took a closer look at the minds of our favorite (and slightly mysterious) feline companions. Researchers created a survey to measure certain “human” traits—like boldness, meanness, and impulsivity—and applied them to cats. The results? Nearly all cats showed some level of psychopathic behavior.

The study, published in the Journal of Research in Personality, asked 549 cat owners to report on their pets’ behavior. Some of the questions were things like:
- Does your cat meow loudly for no clear reason?
- Does your cat act like they’ve never done anything wrong (even when they obviously have)?
- Does your cat randomly run around like they’re being chased by invisible forces?
If your cat checks any of those boxes—congrats, you might be living with a little feline psycho. But let’s be real—cat owners kind of already knew that, right?

According to the researchers, these traits help cats get what they want—whether it’s attention, food, or just pure chaos. And even though it sounds a little wild, it doesn’t mean your cat is bad. It just means they’re… unique. (Let’s go with that.)
