The country’s vibrant festivals and street life are matched by the everyday kindness of its people. Bangkok alone welcomed 32.4 million international visitors in 2024, making it the most visited city in the world that year.
8. Portugal – Warm, Unpretentious, and Quietly Wonderful
Portugal remains a consistently top-rated European destination for friendly encounters. Locals in Lisbon and Porto are known for their openness and genuine willingness to help, making travelers feel welcomed whether they’re in a bustling café or a quiet countryside village. Whether for retirement or remote work, Panama’s welcoming vibe and laid-back charm make it a favorite destination for visitors from all corners of the world. Panama’s Chiriquí region also appeared on Booking.com’s 2026 list of the world’s most welcoming regions, sitting alongside destinations like New Zealand’s Newfoundland and Labrador and Idaho in the United States.
10. New Zealand – Low-Drama Friendliness That Feels Genuine
New Zealand tends to come across as friendly in a grounded, low-key way. InterNations’ 2024 ease-of-settling-in results show the country jumping to 21st place, with a noticeably improved perception of local friendliness. There’s no particular performance to it. People simply seem inclined to be helpful without making a show of it.
The town of Taupō, situated on the shores of New Zealand’s largest lake in the heart of the North Island, exemplifies this character well.
