The last year has been a difficult one and you may find that friends, acquaintances or family members have experienced the loss of a loved one. It can be difficult to know what to say to them or how to act as while you can empathise, there isn’t much you can do to make the situation better. What is important is that they know you are there for them and to talk to if needed. If you want to give them a gift to try and cheer them up, there are a few things you could send. Here are just a few gift ideas for somebody who has lost a loved one.
- Some flowers
One of the most popular gifts for somebody who has lost a loved one is flowers. There are many sympathy flowers on the market, including those from Fig and Bloom which come in a plethora of designs, sizes and styles. Sending a bunch of flowers says all the words you need to say and so much more, without you needing to open your mouth. They are guaranteed to be much appreciated and can help bring a little light and colour into the recipient’s life at a time when they need it the most.
- A photo album
Why not get together some photos of the recipient and the person they have lost and put them together in an album? You could get in touch with their friends and family and put them all together in a lovely book for them to look back on. This will mean that when they are feeling sad they can sit and reminisce on all the lovely memories they had together and think of all the good times.
- A star named after them
One of the most thoughtful gifts you can give is a star named after them. There are services online where you can order this and it means that one of the stars in the sky will be named after the person who has recently passed. It is a great source of comfort for the person who is grieving as every time they go out and see a star in the sky, they will be able to picture the one they have lost looking down on them and feel a closer connection to them.
- A pillow with a photo of them on
Another popular and thoughtful gift idea is to get a pillow or cushion with a photo of them printed on. This is a lovely gift to help them feel closer to them and something they can look at all the time. You could either do it as a single photo of them, or a collage so there are multiple images to look at. Another thing you can do is to have a print made of a letter or a quote from that person. It could be something that was written personally from the one who is no longer here to the one who is bereaved for something even more personal to them.
- A charm for their bracelet
Jewellery is always a great and personal gift and is something they are likely to have on their person a lot of the time. If they have a pandora bracelet or other charm bracelet, why not get them a charm which relates to the one they have recently lost? This could be their birthstone or something that reminds them of them. For example, if their loved one was an artist you could get a paintbrush charm, or a cloud if they loved being outdoors.
- A pampering hamper
When you lose someone close to you, you can forget to look after yourself. Why not treat your friend to a pampering hamper so they can have some me-time. It could include a face mask, body lotion, candles and a book to read. It will be nice for them to take some time off both mentally and physically from the stress and grief they have been experiencing.
These are just a few ideas for gifts to help somebody who has recently lost a loved one. While it can’t help their situation entirely, it will be good for them to know that you are there for them and thinking of them in what is a very difficult time. Bereavement can feel lonely, so this shows you are there and thinking of them even when there aren’t any words to say. What is your favorite idea? Let us know in the comments below!
