Directions
Assemble the sandwich
Layer the ham, turkey (if using), and Swiss cheese between the slices of bread. You can lightly butter the inside if you want extra richness.
Whisk the batter
In a shallow bowl, beat the egg and milk together (just like making French toast).
Dip the sandwich
Carefully dip both sides of the sandwich into the egg mixture. Don’t soak it—just coat it well.
Cook the sandwich
Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the sandwich for 3–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Finish it off
Remove from pan, let it rest 1 minute. Slice in half, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with a side of jam.
