What kind of packer are you when deciding what items to take on vacation? Are you the type of person who packs everything but the kitchen sink, leaving nothing to chance, or do you fling a few things in your suitcase and then spend a day or two finding stores to restock the items you left at home? I fall between those two extremes, although I am known for taking too many T-shirts with me!
I have been fortunate enough to travel far and wide during my 42 years on this incredible planet. Many of my journies have been solo, but equally as many as part of a couple or with young ones in tow. This article isn’t going to delve into fashion tips or what clothing you should take for a city break, but rather give you a handful of everyday items every traveler should pack regardless of their final destination. I’ve made mistakes in the past; learn from the errors of my ways and don’t get caught out the next time you board an airplane.
Travel Adapters, Power Banks, and an Extension Lead
We live in a world where we are continually connected to the internet. Our smartphones are powerful devices connecting us to the outside world, but all of our favorite gadgets require electricity. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to access the best Washington online sportsbooks, catch up with the local news reports, or post a photograph on Facebook only to discover your phone or tablet is deader than a Dodo.
Invest in a travel adaptor with multiple fittings for the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia/Oceania. Purchasing a multi-adapter means you cover all bases. Similarly, power banks, essentially portable battery packs, are a Godsend when you are out and about. They allow you to charge your devices even if you are not near an electricity outlet, perfect for long flights or if you venture off the beaten path.
Do you travel with several electrical devices? Here’s a tip for you: pack an extension lead. Plug the extension lead into the travel adapter, and you can charge multiple devices simultaneously. Such items are freely available in electrical stores or online at websites such as Amazon and similar.
First Aid Kit and Medication
Nobody plans to become ill while on vacation, so few people pack a first aid kit. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail is the motto here. You don’t need to take a first aid kit that wouldn’t look out of place in the ER. A small yet comprehensive kit will suffice.
Band-Aids, anti-bacterial wipes, and pain relief form the foundations of your first aid kit. Consider packing some anti-histamines or insect repellent, indigestion relief tablets, and a packet of Immodium. The last two items are recommended if, like me, you like devouring local delicacies because you could end up with a case of the dreaded “Dehli Belly!”
Don’t forget any prescription medication because you may not be able to get hold of it at your destination. In addition, search online for local laws regarding medication because you may find some prescription medications are controlled substances where you are heading. Obtain a note from your doctor if this is the case because you do not want to fall foul of any laws as they can be strict and the penalties severe.
Basic, Travel-Sized Toiletries
Most hotels provide their guests with toiletries in their rooms, but not all do. Sometimes, the room maid forgets to restock a room while cleaning it; my other half works in a hotel and states this is a more regular occurrence than you would believe. Either of those scenarios is far from ideal, especially if you want to freshen up.
Packing a small range of travel-sized toiletries allows you to freshen up on arrival or the following day. Do not underestimate the positivity that having a warm shower, washing your hair, and brushing your teeth creates. Ensure your toiletries are travel-sized so they do not take up too much space or increase your luggage’s weight too much, and they comply with airport regulations.
A Change of Clothes in Your Carry-On Bag
You can forget this next section if you travel light and only take a carry-on bag on a flight. However, if you are heading somewhere where your main luggage is stored in the plane’s hold, pay close attention!
I once had the opportunity to fly to Cannes on the French Riviera. Upon my arrival, I was excited to explore the picturesque resort town. However, my bag didn’t arrive on the carousel! The airport staff gave me a chewable toothbrush, a basic shaving kit, and a flimsy T-shirt and sent me on my way. My bag arrived two days later, meaning I was without clean clothes for 48 hours of my week-long trip.
Since then, I always take a couple of sets of clean underwear and a couple of T-shirts with me in my carry-on luggage.
Travel and Other Important Documents
This last section seems obvious because it involves ensuring you have your travel and important documents with you. You’re not going anywhere without your passport or other valid government-issued identification, but have you ever taken a photograph or photocopy of them?
Copying your travel documents is recommended in case they go missing during your trip. Likewise, modern-day travelers often have their boarding passes and travel insurance documents saved on their mobile phones or a dedicated app. Electronic copies of your documents save time and space, but what if you lose your phone or cannot access the app in a foreign country? Having a paper copy of important documents helps cover all possibilities.

Everyone has differing opinions on what travel items are considered essentials and which come under luxuries. That said, the items highlighted in this article should be part and parcel of everyone’s luggage regardless of where in the world they are heading.
