A Fun and Simple DIY Halloween Wreath Craft
When it comes to a simple Halloween craft idea that you can do on the cheap, this is one you won’t want to miss. There are only a few materials that you will need, nothing expensive, and this spooky wreath will be ready to hang in no time. The best part about this craft is that it’s so easy anyone can do it – even if they don’t consider themselves crafty. It would also make a great Halloween idea for kids to do with their parents.
What is a DIY Halloween Wreath Craft?
A DIY Halloween wreath craft is a way to make your own decoration for the month of October. While there are many types of Halloween Wreaths, this one uses a styrofoam form, cheese cloth, gardening moss and skulls. All of the items were either bought from Walmart or from the dollar store although, they can also be found on Amazon.
What is Cheese Cloth?
You may wonder what cheese cloth is used for. Cheese cloth is a very thin cloth that can be used as a strainer or as a cover during cooking to keep certain items like herbs inside of the dish while others pass through. It’s also often used in arts and crafts, such as potpourri sachets, since it allows air to circulate through. In this case, the cheesecloth is dyed darker and then when it is wrapped around the form, it has a feel of mummy wrappings or coffin dressings.
What is Styrofoam Wreath Form?
These smaller wreath forms are often found at the dollar store or can be found in the craft section of Walmart. Since these are more simple forms, unlike the grapevine type wreath forms, the forms are cheaper and oftentimes hold up better than the grapevine.
How to Store This Wreath at the End of the Season
When it comes to saving your DIY Halloween wreath for next year, because many outdoor wreaths can be left outside all year round, this one is meant to go inside. The best way to store it would be in a closet or under a bed. By storing your decoration where it’s dry, you’ll be able to use it again next year. There are a lot of different storage containers for wreaths. These containers are great for keeping the wreaths safe until next year.
How Many Years Can I Keep This DIY Halloween Wreath?
Since this wreath is made with Styrofoam and not a natural material like grapevine, you can keep it for multiple years. This means that if you take care of your DIY Halloween wreath by storing it safely away at the end of October, then you’ll be able to use it again next year just by giving it a light dusting to clean off the dust. After that, it will be ready to hang up again.
Who Can Use This Craft?
This wreath is meant for anyone who wants a Halloween decoration but doesn’t have the money to spend on an expensive one. Even if you’re not crafty, this DIY Halloween Wreath is simple enough that even someone who doesn’t have any crafty skill can make it. You can also do this craft with kids or family members, even the young ones, to get them involved in October fun. This would be a great Halloween decoration for families who are hosting friends and want to give everyone something to see when they come over since these are cheap enough that you could get several of them.
Tips on how to display your new Halloween decoration
Since the DIY Halloween Wreath is so easy to make, it’s also very easy to display. You can hang it on your front door or any other area where you want everyone who walks by to see. Because of its size, you can even just leave it out in your yard where trick-or-treaters will be able to see it.
Because my Walmart was only just getting their Halloween decorations, I wasn’t not able to find small skeletons, but I was able to find some really neat skulls and glittery spiders.

What You Need
Most of these items are available at your local crafts store, big box store or even dollar store. If you are like me and like to shop online, you can shop this post – A Fun and Simple DIY Halloween Wreath Supplies
- Styrofoam Wreath Form
- Cheese Cloth
- Artificial Spanish Moss
- Paint and Food Coloring
- Hot Glue Gun and Sticks
- Skulls, Spiders and other Halloween Creepies
First I needed to dye the cheese cloth. I used dye I had one hand, which works like food dye, so it was not exactly black, but more of purplish in some areas and greenish in other. I love the effect. Once I wrapped the cheese cloth around my wreath, then pinning into place, I used my Fiskars scissors to add to the ripped and tattered effect.
I could not find lichen moss and was only able to find bright green spanish moss. Since this was not the look I was going for, I mixed my Spanish moss with black paint and made it much darker, creating a dead effect.
Then came the gluing. Using my hot glue gun, I glued my decorations into place.
Let the whole thing dry and it is ready to go. Perfect for adding a bit of frigh to any Halloween decor.
