The Apartment Red Flags People Only Notice After they Move In

Sometimes (thankfully not always), apartment tours can be such a scam. Well, not always in some illegal, lawyer-up kind of way. But more of the fact that once you’re in the apartment long enough, you immediately see the issues. Actually, the same can be said for houses too, so it’s not only apartments for rent. It’s hard to really learn about a potential home until you actually move in.

So while everything seems great during the tour, once that paperwork is signed, the boxes from the movers are brought in, it’s only a matter of time before the issues show up. But during your next viewing, is there anything you can potentially look out for?

    There’s the Noise Situation

This one catches people all the time because a building can seem so calm during a tour. Suspiciously calm, honestly. But of course, it’s not like the apartment building itself is trying to be sneaky or scammy; sometimes it’s just having a viewing at the wrong time (when everything is calm), like in the morning or early afternoon. These times don’t really show how loud it can be in the evenings when the neighbors are home, or during rush hour (so you can hear the traffic outside).

So, once you move in, thinking it’s a quiet apartment (when in fact it wasn’t), it’ll get to the point where it messes with your sleep. And then everything else gets uglier. You can usually expect that work feels harder, and patience gets thinner. Well, those, but even tiny things start feeling bigger because being tired makes everything more irritating. That’s why bad apartment noise is such a pain, because it’s there until you leave that apartment.

    Laundry and Parking

Usually, guests have a parking spot, so when you first go to an apartment complex, the parking might be easy. But that’s a big “might,” of course, because you could also immediately see the red flag. But if it’s a communal laundry space, then you won’t know how bad it is until you move in, unless, during the tour itself, you see a bunch of “Out of Order” signs on the machines.

And while sure, all of this stuff sounds minor when describing it, but once you live through little inconveniences, they don’t stay little forever; it just adds up, and you get more and more irritated.

    Package Problems

Sure, there’s the whole problem with porch pirates if you own a house, but just because you live in an apartment doesn’t immediately mean there isn’t a risk of your packages getting stolen. For starters, here, when a building has no real package system, or parcels get dumped in random places, or things keep going missing, or the mail area feels like a free-for-all with fluorescent lighting, it gets old unbelievably fast. Plus, when you go on a tour in the apartment, you probably won’t think to ask about this stuff either, which also doesn’t help.

    Weak Water Pressure

Maybe during the tour, you turned on the faucet in the kitchen, but that doesn’t immediately give you an idea of how all of this is, though. But once you move in and you take a shower, then you’ll really get to see for yourself how weak the water pressure is.
