What eats what in a pond? These Pond Food Chain Worksheets give children a hands-on way to find out while learning about freshwater ecosystems.

This four-page printable science set combines food chains and food webs with coloring, cutting, pasting, sequencing, and labeling. It’s an engaging way to introduce young learners to the relationships between the plants, tiny organisms, fish, birds, and other animals that share a pond habitat.

🐟 Explore a Pond Food Chain

One of the easiest ways to introduce ecosystems is with a simple food chain.

This printable activity uses the sequence:

Algae → Zooplankton → Small Fish → Large Fish → Heron

Children can color and cut out each organism before deciding where it belongs in the sequence. The pieces can then be added to the fun foldable heron activity.

Following the chain helps students visualize how energy moves through the ecosystem, beginning with a producer and continuing through different consumers.

🌿 What Is a Pond Food Web?

Of course, a real pond is more complicated than one food chain.

Animals can have several food sources, and the same organism can provide food for multiple animals. A pond food web is a great way to demonstrate these overlapping relationships.

The included food web worksheet challenges children to look at the different pond organisms, decide where they belong, and follow the arrows connecting them.

It’s a natural next step after learning about a basic food chain.

    🐸 Hands-On Ecosystem Learning

Young learners often benefit from being able to interact with what they’re studying. Instead of only looking at a completed diagram, students can help build the food chain and food web themselves.

Children can color, cut, arrange, paste, sequence, and label the different pieces. There’s also a Draw & Label a Food Chain activity that encourages students to apply what they’ve learned.

Along the way, you can introduce science vocabulary such as ecosystem, producer, consumer, predator, prey, food chain, and food web.

🐦 Perfect for a Pond or Freshwater Habitat Unit

These pond worksheets work well alongside lessons about freshwater habitats, pond animals, ecosystems, animal relationships, or nature studies.

Use them for elementary science lessons, homeschool units, science centers, independent practice, or as a supplemental activity during a pond study.

Print the four pages, grab crayons, scissors, and glue, and let kids discover just how connected life in a pond can be.
