Encouraging children to read regularly can help them develop stronger literacy skills, discover new interests, and build a lifelong love of books. But sometimes young readers need a little extra motivation to reach for something new.

A 12 Month Reading Challenge for Kids turns everyday reading into a fun, year-long activity. With a different challenge for every month from January through December, children can explore new authors, genres, subjects, and styles while working toward achievable reading goals.

Our printable Monthly Reading Challenge includes 12 colorful seasonal pages filled with reading prompts that can be used at home, in the classroom, during homeschool lessons, or as part of a library reading program.

What Is a Monthly Reading Challenge?

A monthly reading challenge provides children with different prompts or goals to complete while reading.

Instead of simply asking a child to “read more,” the challenge gives them specific ideas for choosing their next book.

A prompt might encourage a child to read a nonfiction book, discover a new author, choose a book with a particular type of cover, read a book recommended by someone else, or explore a topic they haven’t read about before.

These small challenges can add variety to independent reading and encourage children to venture beyond their usual book choices.

    12 Months of Reading Activities

This printable reading challenge includes a separate activity sheet for every month of the year:

January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December.

Each page features a colorful seasonal design and 20 different reading prompts, giving children plenty of opportunities to complete challenges throughout the month.

Because every month contains new prompts, the activity can continue throughout the entire school year and into summer break.

Why Use Reading Challenges With Kids?

Reading challenges can make independent reading feel more purposeful while still allowing children to choose books that interest them.

Rather than focusing only on the number of books completed, varied reading prompts can encourage children to explore different subjects, characters, authors, genres, and formats.

A reading challenge can also help add structure to independent reading time without turning every book into an assignment.

Children can simply mark off each square as they complete it and see their progress throughout the month.

Use the Challenge in the Classroom

Teachers can incorporate a monthly reading challenge into many parts of their classroom routine.

Display the current challenge in your reading center, provide each student with a personal copy, or send the sheet home as an optional family reading activity.

    The challenges can also complement:

    • Independent reading time
    • Classroom reading centers
    • Reading homework
    • Literacy stations
    • Book clubs
    • Early finisher activities
    • School reading programs
    • Library activities

At the beginning of each month, introduce the new challenge and give students time to look through the prompts. At the end of the month, students can share favorite books they discovered along the way.

    A Fun Homeschool Reading Activity

The 12 Month Reading Challenge also works well for homeschool families looking for a simple way to encourage independent reading.

Add the current month’s page to your child’s homeschool reading binder or display it near your family bookshelf.

Children can choose which prompts they want to tackle first and mark them off as they complete each one.

You can also visit the library together and use the challenge prompts as a guide for selecting new books.

Encourage Children to Explore Different Books

Young readers often return to the same authors, characters, and types of books—and there’s nothing wrong with having favorites.

A reading challenge, however, provides a gentle way to encourage exploration.

A child who normally prefers fiction might discover an interesting nonfiction book. Another reader might find a new favorite author after completing a prompt that encourages them to try someone new.

Over an entire year, those small choices can introduce children to a much broader variety of reading experiences.

Make It a Family Reading Challenge

Reading challenges don’t have to be limited to school.

    Parents can participate too!

Choose books that match some of the prompts and complete the challenge alongside your child. Family members can talk about what they’re reading, recommend books to each other, and celebrate completed challenges together.

This can turn the printable into a fun family reading activity rather than another school assignment.

Create a Reading Challenge Reward System

If your child enjoys working toward rewards, you can create simple milestones around the challenge.

For example, celebrate after completing five prompts, ten prompts, or an entire monthly sheet.

Rewards don’t need to be expensive. Children might choose the next family read-aloud, receive extra library time, pick a special bookmark, choose where to read for the afternoon, or select the next book they want to borrow.

The goal is to keep the emphasis on enjoying books and celebrating reading progress.

Keep Kids Reading Throughout the Year

    Reading isn’t only a school-year activity.

Having challenges for all 12 months makes it easy to continue encouraging reading during weekends, holidays, school vacations, and summer break.

The seasonal monthly pages also provide fresh motivation throughout the year rather than asking children to complete the same reading tracker repeatedly.

Whether you’re a teacher creating a classroom literacy program, a homeschool parent planning reading lessons, or a family looking for ways to encourage more reading at home, a 12 Month Reading Challenge Printable provides a simple and engaging way to make books part of every month.
