As you progress through life, your health needs change. Things that were not necessary to check when you were younger will now become commonplace. Start your senior years the right way by prioritizing necessary medical appointments now so you can live better in your golden years.

    Hearing Exam

Hearing exams may seem like far-off appointments that you will make when you need to. Unfortunately, as you age, you may not always realize that your hearing has diminished. Others in your life might help you compensate for your hearing loss by speaking louder, or you could be missing out on information and conversations without even realizing it.

It is important to make an appointment to have your hearing checked annually or as needed. If your audiologist determines that a hearing aid is the right solution to help you hear better, it is important to know that advanced hearing aid features are available so you can begin hearing with clarity once again.

    Mental Health Check

Everyone has feelings that swing from highs to lows depending on what they are experiencing in their respective lives. When your mood begins to dip too low and stay that way, you need to see a mental health professional for care and assistance. However, seeing a mental health provider in good times is helpful, too. This appointment allows you to talk through any problems or concerns you have and can help you gain a new perspective on certain areas of your life.

Watch this video to learn about recent discoveries surrounding mental health and the aging process.

    Annual Medical Exam

Depending on your gender, your annual well-check will look different. Regardless, the important thing is to schedule this critical exam every year. Your provider will screen you for a range of conditions, order a panel of blood tests, and conduct a wellness exam specific to your age, gender, and based on your past medical history.

During this appointment, you may discuss other unique needs that will require a referral from your primary care physician. These may include a mammogram, seeing a menopause specialist, a colonoscopy, or a prostate exam. Your provider should initiate these appointments and referrals, but you can empower yourself and request them once you know what you need.

    Vision Exam

Your eyes are important and will change as you age. Even if you have perfect vision and have never needed corrective lenses, the probability of needing reading glasses is high for most people at some point in their lives.

Beyond assessing the need for glasses or contact lenses, your eye care provider will test your eyes for a variety of concerns, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts. It is important to see your eyecare provider at least once per year or more often if needed.

If vision correction is necessary, your provider will help determine the right prescription glasses for you. Choosing the correct prescription ensures clear vision, reduces eye strain, and supports overall eye health.

Getting older does not have to mean you fall apart. You can age well and live well by taking care of yourself. One of the most significant parts of caring for yourself is making essential health appointments and keeping them. Pay attention to your health and reach out to professionals when you need more care so you can get back to enjoying your life.
