Having a big family is wonderful- your home is always busy and full of joy, there’s always someone to talk to and you have a strong sense of family and community being all together. But it also brings some challenges, and certain things can crop up that people in smaller family units never have to think about much. Here are a few things that us big families have to consider!

    Finding the Right Home

The right home will have enough space for your family now as well as be future proof. Maybe you will decide to grow your family more, but even if you dont, the kids in your house will soon turn to bigger teens and then adults before flying the next so will need enough room. If you’re looking for a new home for your big family, think about houses that can easily be re-jigged if needed. For example, large rooms that can be split into smaller ones with temporary walls, which can be removed in the future when they’re no longer needed. Consider if there’s room to extend either outwards, up into the loft or down into the basement. When you find the right home, be sure to book professional movers– physically moving your large families possessions from A to B is a huge task in itself!

    Choosing the Right Car

Having a car that fits everyone comfortably is crucial. Consider a vehicle with enough seats for everyone in the family, larger vehicles like SUVs, MPVs or even a minibus might be what you’re after.. Look for good deals and reliable models to save money in the long run.

    Saving Money on Meals

Cooking for a big family can be expensive, but there are smart ways to save money. Plan meals ahead of time, buy in bulk to get discounts, and look for sales at your local grocery store. Cooking at home will pretty much always be cheaper than eating out so save restaurants and takeouts for special occasions. If you’re a keen cook you’re sure to be able to find recipes that can be made in big portions- stews, curries, pasta or potato bake and other hotpot/ one pot meals are all great choices.

    Finances and Future

Financial planning is essential for everyone but can take some extra consideration with a big family. Set up a budget to track expenses and save for the future- consider things like education, emergencies and family activities. Get savvy with things like days out- utilise 2 for 1 tickets, family savers tickets and discounts when you’re going out for the day. Free days out like parks, beaches and farms are great places to frequent too when you have a big family. Being prepared helps reduce stress and ensures a secure future for your family.
