Hint: The Air Fryer Apple Crisp can also be made in a cake pan, instead of ramekins. The process is the same, with a few changes. Use the instructions below to make the Apple Crisp in the Air Fryer cake pan.

    Equipment

    • Air fryer
    • Vegetable peeler
    • Apple corer
    • Cutting board
    • Knife
    • Ramekins or cake pan for air fryer
    • Pieces of foil

    🥄 Variations

    • Feel free to experiment with other types of apples. I used Fuji and granny smith, but you can use any kind of baking apple.
    • You can use any type of oil or butter in the crumble topping, such as coconut oil, vegan margarine, or ghee.
    • If you are looking for a lower-sugar option, try substituting ½ cup maple syrup instead of ¾ cup granulated sugar. You can also use a sugar substitute.
    • Make it gluten-free by using a one-to-one gluten-free flour.
    • Try substituting the apples for a combination of fresh fruit such as peaches, pears, cherries, or berries. Make sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly. You may need to add more sweeteners and/or spices based on the sweetness of your fruit.
    • You can make this recipe vegan by substituting the butter in the crumb topping with a vegan alternative, such as coconut oil or vegan margarine.

    🍽️ What to Serve With

    • Chocolate Syrup
    • No Churn Apple Pie Ice Cream
    • Copycat Panera Autumn Squash Soup
    • Lightened Up Sausage Gravy and Biscuits

    🍶 Storing

To store the apple crisp on the counter, place it in an air-tight container and leave it out 2 days tops on your counter.

Refrigerator Storage: To store the apple crisp in the fridge, place it in an air-tight container and it will last up to five days in the fridge.

Freezer Storage: You can freeze the crisp for up to 3 months. Place it in an airtight container, such as a freezer bag or a Tupperware container with a lid. Thaw it in the refrigerator before reheating in the air fryer or in the oven at 350°F for about 15 minutes.

To Reheat: Place it on a microwave plate or in a bowl, and microwave for just 15 – 20 seconds.

    💭Top Tips

    • Make sure to use baking apples. I used Fuji and granny smith but you can also use Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Jonagold.
    • Since air fryer temperatures vary, just like ovens, if the air fryer apple crisps are starting to burn decrease the temperature.
    • Don’t forget to spray your ramekins with non-stick cooking spray before adding the apple crisp mixture. This will help prevent sticking.

    ❔FAQs

    Is air-fried food healthy?

Yes, air-fried foods are a healthy alternative to deep-fried foods. Air fryers use hot air and little to no oil to cook food, making them a healthier option that still produces delicious results. This doesn’t actually healthy, just a better option.

What is the difference between an apple crisp and a streusel or crumble?

The difference between an apple crisp and a streusel or crumble is that an apple crisp has a thicker layer of crumb topping, while a streusel or crumble has a thinner layer of crumb topping. A crisp also usually includes oats in the crumb mixture.

Can I make this recipe in the oven?

Yes, you can. Preheat your oven to 350°F and bake for about 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender. You may need to cover the top with foil if it is browning too quickly.

Should the apples be peeled for an apple crisp?

When making apple crisp in the oven, it doesn’t matter if the apples are peeled or not. In this case, since the apples cook faster in the air fryer, the peels will not have time to soften. You can leave the peels on but it is best to remove them.

Why is my apple crisp not crispy?

If your apple crisp is not crispy, it may be because the crumb topping has too much moisture. Try baking the crumble topping separately on a baking sheet for a few minutes before adding it to the apples. Also, make sure that you are using butter or oil that is at room temperature and not melted when making the crumble topping.

Why does apple crisp get watery?

Apple crisp gets watery when the apples are not cooked all the way through. Make sure that you cut your apples into small pieces and cook them for the full amount of time as specified in the recipe. Also, make sure that any juices from the apples have been absorbed before adding the crumb topping. If there is too much juice the crisp can get soggy.

What are some other toppings I can add to the crisp?

You can top this apple crisp with a dollop of cream, yogurt, or ice cream for a delicious treat. You can also sprinkle it with nuts, shredded coconut, seeds, or granola for a crunchy topping. For added sweetness, drizzle with a little honey or maple syrup before serving.
