What Kind of Chili to Use
I tend to use a basic canned chili , like Hormel chili for chili cheese dip. I have used other brands as well. You just want to use a chili that you like. This dip is also a good way to use up chili that you have as leftovers. Some people only like their own homemade chili, which I get because I am very fussy about my chili, and you can easily use your own. You will need about 2 cups of chili to equal the canned chili.
Is this a skyline chili cheese dip
Skyline chili cheese dip is this recipe and using a Cincinnati style chili. Cincinnati style chili is made with a thinner consistency and is blended together. It also has a different set of spice, like cinnamon, cocoa, allspice and worcheshire sauce.
If you want this to be a try Skyline Chili Cheese Dip recipe, simply make sure that you are using Skyline chili. Everything else is the same for making this chili cheese dip.
Making chili cheese dip in the crockpot
I get it. My slow cooker is my best friend, especially for parties. I want to set it up and forget it. Then I know it doesn’t get forgotten about in the hecticness of the day. You can absolutely make this in the crockpot or slow cooker. Technically you can even make it in the pressure cooker. All the steps are the same. When you make slow cooker chili cheese dip, you are placing it in the crockpot instead of the oven. You can cook it on high for about an hour and 30 minutes or on low for about 3 hours.
A variation when making this recipe in the slow cooker, people often like to use Velveeta cheese instead of cheddar cheese.
Can I make this vegetarian
Not many people stop to think about a veggie chili cheese dip, but I got you. You can absolutely make this vegetarian. You will want to use a vegetarian chili recipe. This vegetarian chili recipe doesn’t use a meat substitute it is a true veggie chili. However, if you want to make it more like the original but without meat, you can make a traditional chili recipe and replace the ground beef with meatless crumbles and then go from there.
Since you won’t need a whole batch of chili, I would make the batch of chili, then move it to portion size containers or freezer bags. Freeze it and then the next time you want to make this chili cheese dip recipe, which will be often, take the chili from the freezer.

Can you make this bean free?
Yes, you can make this a beans free chili dip. I love the beans in this recipe because I love the texture that they add, plus it bulks up the recipe. And chili and beans are partners in crime for me. However, I know that a lot of people just do not like beans. You can use a bean free chili in the dip and then you are good to go.
Is this a gluten free recipe
That is going to depend on the chili that you use. Most chili recipes, canned and homemade, are usually gluten free. But if this is something that you need to be sure of, please check the can of chili ingredients before serving. Everything that I am adding to the chili dip is gluten free so this is where you need to be careful.
How long does it last?
This chili cheese dip recipe will last in the fridge for up to a week. Be sure to keep it in an airtight container. Also, when storing, make sure it is completely cooled before placing it in the refrigerator. If not, you can run the risk of it spoiling earlier.
Can it be frozen?
Yes, the chili cheese dip can be frozen. I never make it ahead and freeze it, this is something that I save for situations like I have leftovers that are not going to get finished in time. It is rare but it has happened once or twice.
Some people do not like to freeze the dip because it is cream cheese based, but I have never had any issues and have frozen it many times over the years. I break it down into portion sizes that way I can take out a bit at a time and reheat it in the microwave.
How to reheat chili cheese dip
When the chili dip is still in the original pan, I will often just reheat it directly in the pan, in the oven. If it has been moved to a container or being pulled from the freezer, I will reheat it in the microwave.
It can also be reheated on the stove top in a pot or skillet.
Variations to Hormel Chili Cheese Dip
I already mentioned a few ways to change this chili cheese dip recipe up. Simply by changing the type of chili, to making it vegetarian or taking out the beans. But there are other things that you can do too.
Add toppings. I have kept this recipe simple, with only 3 ingredients. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t go wild. Add in some toppings. Anything from just adding in chopped onions, green onions or salsa to avocado on top. Green chiles or jalapenos are a great add in too. Some people like to add cilantro over the top.
Swap the cheese. I am using cheddar cheese, but you can use other cheese like American, pepper jack cheese or Mexican blend.
Spice it up. I tend to use a mild chili because not everyone in my house likes it spicy. When it is just me, I go hot. I love it spicy. You can control the spiciness of the dip by the chili that you choose. And then if the chili can use a bump, you can add some diced jalapenos, chili powder or even some hot sauce. Some people like doing it this way because you can control the amount of heat.
How to serve chili cheese dip
You can serve this chili cheese dip with a lot of things. All of your favorite dippers can be used. Things like tortilla chips, Fritos or Frito scoops, or potato chips. Pretzels are also a great tasting choice. I have used pieces of bread. And veggies are one of my favorites, especially peppers, carrots and sugar snap peas. We use this chili dip over hot dogs to make the BEST chili cheese dogs. And it takes amazing on burgers as well.
Weight Watchers Chili Cheese Dip
When you are making this as a WW appetizer, you want to use a low fat cheese. Personally I do not mind fat free cheese, but some people prefer to use the low fat because they issues with the cheese melting.
To make this recipe lower in saturated fat, use low fat cheddar cheese and fat free cream cheese. Use a turkey chili to reduce the points as well. I can not give an exact point count because it will vary from plan to plan, but for me, the dip comes in at 2 points per serving and to keep the points low, I would use veggie dippers. Avoid the bread, chips and Fritos so that you can avoid the extra carbohydrates.
