Funny Cake Recipe
This Funny Cake Recipe is sure to get everyone’s attention. It’s a delicious and unique twist on a classic dessert.
Serve this cake at your next party and watch it disappear before your eyes. Everyone will love the sweet and salty flavor combination. Plus, it’s really easy to make – even if you’re not a master baker.
What is funny cake?
Funny cake is a delicious vanilla cake over a chocolate filling layer that is baked inside of a flaky pie crust. Some people call it a cake, some people call it a pie, no matter what you call it, it is absolutely amazing.
Funny cake is said to get its name from the fact that it is a cake over chocolate in a pie. Other people think it got its name because you don’t put the chocolate in first. You place the cake layer in the pie shell and then you pour the chocolate over top. As the funny cake bakes, the chocolate sauce sinks to the bottom of the pan and rests on top of the pie crust.
Have you ever noticed how certain foods are very localized to an area. Some foods are everywhere. They make their way from one state to the next, across this country and that country, and through all cultures. Then there are some foods that people only know of in certain areas of a country, like Tandy Cakes or like certain southern foods. Funny cake is certainly one of those items. This Pennsylvania Dutch classic is a treat that many people do not know about outside of the area. It’s a shame for them because this is a must try dessert.
Is it a dessert or for breakfast
So many people look at this treat and think dessert. That makes sense. It is cake and chocolate and pie crust. However, around here a lot of people will eat funny cake as a breakfast cake. Kind of like how people like to have coffee cake or danish with their coffee in the morning.

Homemade or store bought crust
This is up to you. I have used both homemade pie crust and store bought. If you have a pie crust recipe that you absolutely love, use it. If you not, you can certainly use store bought.
How to store funny cake
You want to store the funny cake at room temperature. Once it has cooled, wrap it well with plastic wrap and store it in a cool place. I don’t like to keep cake in the refrigerator when I can avoid it because it dries the cake out and makes it taste dry and stale faster.
How long is funny cake good for?
Funny cake is good for three to five days. After that, it will start to get dry and hard. If it starts to taste a little dry, you can warm it in the microwave for about 10 seconds with a damp paper towel.
Can you freeze it?
Funny cake can be frozen for two to three months. Again, make sure it is tightly wrapped with plastic wrap or placed in an airtight container. When you are ready to serve it, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and then let it come to room temperature before serving.

It is so good, seriously on of my favorite recipes, people actually pay $7 all the way up $16 a pie when they buy them in the bakery. Considering how quickly they get eaten in my house, I have to make them from scratch or else I’d go broke.

How to Make Amish Funny Cake
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Have your pie dough ready, in the pie plates. Place the pie pans on the baking sheet.
In a large mixing bowl, cream sugar, oil, eggs until well blended.
Slowly add the flour, baking powder, milk, and vanilla. Beat on medium 2 minutes.
Pour into the unbaked pie crusts.
In a small bowl, mix together sugar, cocoa, and hot water.
Pour the chocolate mixture over top of cake batter. Swirl around the top as you pour it in. Do not mix it in. Just pour the chocolate and let it lay. This will let the chocolate layer sinks to the bottom of the cake.
Bake at 350 for 1 hour.
Let cool and enjoy.

I don’t know if you watch Drop Dead Diva on Lifetime but her friend created something like this and called it a Pake! Pie+Cake=Pake
I never saw that show. I’ll have to look it up.
I need to give this a try. I wonder if it will work as a gluten free conversion.
I have not heard of that, but it looks good. Thanks for sharing.

At first glance, I thought photo was a pumpkin or sweet potato pie. I never heard of funny cake but it sounds interesting.

So this is what you were talking about! Must try it!
My step dad is from outside Lancaster so we are very familiar with these pies. When someone visits they mail them back to us. Another one of my favorites from that area is the Shoefly pie. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
I’ve never seen anything like this and it looks soooooo good!
Thanks for this recipe….sounds tooo good. I am going to try an eggless veriation of the same and see how it fares 🙂
Your description of what this cake is, where it is from and how to make it is dead on correct and just cracked me up! I live right in the middle of Amish country and I love funny cake and shoofly pie. My neighbors are Amish and make the best. Thank you for spreading the word and I plan to start making my own pies now because you are right, buying them IS expensive!
Thanks. I wish I had someone Amish to make one for me, just to add that special touch. I could eat it everyday.
Ooh thanks for this! Funny cake was my favorite dessert as a kid! (I’m from Allentown PA)
Definitely going to make this!
I’ve had this before and it’s so good! Thanks for the recipe!
Is there any chance the image of the funny cake slice could be added to the Wikipedia commons in order to make an article about funny cake?
Coming from NE Amish area of PA decades past, I’ve made about a dozen Funny Cakes over my life but lost my German version which sounds much like this one and quite good.
There has to be sufficient cocoa to sugar and many recipes don’t allow enough eggs for a the fluffy cake portion. You FORGOT THE PIE PAN SIZE. 9″ or 8″? Would love to know where this info is at. Thank you for the generosity of posting!
I use a 9 inch. Thanks for pointing out that I forgot it.
