My kids love a Monte Cristo for dinner or lunch. In fact, they ask for it often. Thankfully, it is easy to make a Monte Cristo, this kid friendly dinner.
I am always looking for a great kid friendly dinner. The first time I made the kids a Monte Cristo they were hooked. Basically a Monte Cristo is is a great twist on the classic ham and cheese that is made using french toast. Kids love to be able to dip the sandwich into syrup. Or you can put syrup over the whole sandwich and cut it into bite sized pieces.
I have seen these sandwiches done in a batter as well, but my family does not like them done that way. It gives them a different taste and a very heavy feel.
How to Make a Monte Cristo
Ingredients:
egg
milk
vanilla
bread
ham
cheese
syrup: optional
mayo or mustard: optional
1. Crack the egg into a bowl and mix with the milk, making a french toast type batter. The amount you need will depend on how many sandwiches you are making. Add a dash of vanilla.
2. Make your ham and cheese sandwich. This is where you would add the mayo and mustard if you prefer. Some people really prefer the bite of a spicy mustard on a Monte Cristo.
3. Once the sandwich is assembled, dip the entire assembled sandwich into the french toast mixture. You can do it separated but them the sandwich doesn’t meld as well together, in my opinion.
4. Flip the sandwich.
5. Then place on a hot griddle. You can use a frying pan but I prefer a griddle. Depending on what kind of pan you are using, you might need to spray it with cooking spray or butter.
6. Continue to cook like a grilled sandwich, or french toast, until the bread is golden brown and the egg is cooked.
7. To serve you can either eat like sandwich and just get all sticky, or add the syrup to the inside, cut it with a fork
My kids like to cut it into pieces and dip it into syrup on the side.
Or cut into strips and dunk.

Thanks for reminding me of these. They are delish!
They’re also good dipped in blackberry jam.
