Easy Sopes Recipe

I love Mexican food, but sometimes I don’t have a lot of time to make dinner. That’s why I like this easy recipe. It can be made in about 20 minutes and it only has a few ingredients!

I’m sure you’ll find yourself making this dish over and over again because it is so good for such a quick meal.

What are sopes

Sopes are a delicious Mexican dish that consists of a thick corn tortilla with different fillings. They taste similar to the outside coating that you find on tamales. Since these are fried, they also have a crispy texture with a bit of salt that creates an incredible flavor combination. Since they are made with masa and are usually about 1/3 to 1/2 inch thick, they are soft on the inside while being crispy on the outside. They are served with beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and avocado on the side or in the center. You can use almost anything you would like for filling such as chicken, beef, pork, or refried beans. You can make vegan sopes or vegetarian sopes also.

Can I Use Cornflour in place of Masa Harina

Masa harina is a type of corn flour that is treated to give it a special flour. This process also makes it more easily digestible. It is then rinsed, dried out, and ground into flour. It is not the same as cornflour or cornmeal and can not be interchanged.

Where to Find Masa Harina

Masa Harina can be found in most grocery stores on the international island. Locate to the Latin section and you should have no problem finding it.

What is the difference between sopes and gorditas?

Sopes and gorditas are very similar in appearance, but they are actually quite different. Both of these dishes use corn tortillas as the base with thick masa dough, but sopes have an outer crispy coating while gorditas usually do not.

Gorditas also tend to be smaller than sopes and made into small circles. You can fill gorditas with different combinations of meats, beans, and vegetables or just drizzle it with the traditional Oaxacan string cheese. Girditas are also smaller in size so they can be perfect as an appetizer or snack while sopes are usually a full meal.

When are sopes eaten

Sopes are most commonly eaten during the weekends and on special occasions with family or friends at dinner time. They can also be served as appetizers or snacks along with fresh salsa and guacamole.

Can I make this Mexican sopes recipe ahead of time?

Yes, it is possible to make this sopes recipe ahead of time. Allow them to cool then place them in an airtight container. They will be good in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or you can freeze them and they will keep up to three months.

When it is time to heat them up you will warm them in a 350-degree oven for about 15 minutes. Fill them and enjoy.

What is the best way to reheat sopes?

You can reheat your sopes by placing them in a 350-degree oven for about 15 minutes. You can also eat them right after they are cooked without reheating or you can cover them and place them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.  Heat them up on the stovetop with some cheese or fill with beans and re-heat in the microwave. Which one do you prefer?

They are great for breakfast too! Add a fried egg on top of your sopes, some hot sauce, chopped tomatoes, and onions. Yum!

What other toppings would be good on sopes?

You can top your sopes with a variety of toppings and it’s always fun to try new combinations. Some popular toppings include salsa verde chopped tomatoes, onions, jalapeno peppers, hot sauce, sour cream, or shredded cheese. You can also add refried beans, chicken, beef, pork, or even eggs.

How much do sopes cost?

They can be quite cheap if you try to make them at home, but they can also get expensive if you buy them from a restaurant or store. If you are making your own homemade sopes then they will cost about 35 cents each.

If you want to buy them from a restaurant or store, they can cost 4 dollars to 8 dollars each depending on where you live and what toppings you use.

Can I Bake Sopes recipe?

While it is not ideal, you can bake sopes, but I do not recommend it. It changes the texture of the sopes. When they are baked the sopes tend to taste dense and do not have the soft interior with the crispy outside that they are known for.

Can I make Vegan Sopes?

These sopes are vegan if you use a vegan-approved oil. Then you only need to use vegan-approved toppings.

Do Sopes Have Gluten?

Masa Harina is naturally gluten-free since it is made with corn. As long as you add gluten-free toppings, Mexican Sopes are 100% gluten-free.

How to Store Sopes

When storing them, you want to make sure they are cooled completely. Then place them in an airtight container. It will stay good for up to 7 days.

How to Freeze Sopes

In order to freeze them, you need to let the sopes cool completely. Then you want to freeze them on a baking sheet or plate. Make sure they are not touching each other and then let them freeze for about an hour. This prevents them from sticking together when placed in the bag. Move them to a freezer bag and then remove the excess air. The sopes will last for about 1 month in the freezer.

Why Do I Make the Rimmed Edge

The rimmed edge is a classic characteristic of sopes. Since it is like a shallow bowl, the rimmed edge helps to make sure that the ingredients stay inside. If you wanted to make them without the edge, it would work but it would be messier.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

Inexpensive– I am always looking for an inexpensive recipe to make for dinner or get-togethers, and these are very inexpensive to make. That makes it great for making them for a crowd or as a cheap dinner idea.

Make-ahead– Anytime I can make dinner or appetizers ahead of time and make my life easier, that is a win in my house. Since the sopes and the toppings, like refried beans or meat, can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Then all we have to do is reheat them when it is time to eat. That means these are also great for a snack idea for after school or in the late afternoon.

Great for a Crowd- These are great for a large number of people. They are easy to make and since they are inexpensive, I can make them no matter how many people come over. Use them for game day, potlucks, tailgating, a twist on Taco Tuesday, or picnics.

Delicious– You can’t go wrong. They are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and can be topped with whatever you like so there is something for everyone.
