The Best Healthy Homemade Pop Tarts

The Best Healthy Homemade Pop Tarts

My family loves poptarts. Even hubby. I have to admit, I like to have them on occasion too. But my waistline does not like pop tarts. They are jammed pack with sugar, fat and empty calories. So I decided to make a better for you version.

These are healthier Pop Tarts. These are not packed with vitamins and fuel for your body. But, they are perfect for a better for you treat that I don’t have to feel guilty about giving my kids or enjoying myself.

What Fillings Go Into Pop Tarts?

I am using a sugar free cherry preserve. You can change this to any flavor you like. You also do not need to use sugar free. I am doing this to keep these a bit healthier.

If you want strawberry pop tarts, you can use strawberry preserves or strawberry jam.

What Icing Goes on Pop Tarts?

I like to make a light powdered sugar glaze using fat free half and half.

Can These Homemade Pop Tarts Be Made in the Oven

Yes. You can bake these pop tarts instead of using the Air Fryer. You will want to preheat the oven to 400 degrees and bake the poptarts for 15-18 minutes.

How Many Weight Watchers Points in Air Fryer Homemade Pop Tarts

Did you know that pop tarts tend to come in at 8 or 9 points depending on the type. That is crazy. That is why I wanted to make my own healthier homemade version.

The point count on these homemade pop tarts are an estimated count. That is because you might put more or less on than I do. When I make these for me I use about a tablespoon of sugar free preserves. I also use the entire batch of glaze over all 7 pop tarts. You might not. In my point count, I am also not including sprinkles.

    • Blue- 3
    • Purple-3
    • Green– 4

If you wanted to lower the points on these even more, you can use water with the glaze and skip the vanilla. Since these are an indulgence for me, I don’t mind the extra point to make the glaze special.

The Best Healthy Homemade Pop Tarts

    Ingredients

    • 2 Ingredient Dough
    • Sugar free cherry preserves
    • Water
    • Powdered sugar
    • Fat free half and half
    • Vanilla Extract
    • Sprinkles
    • Spray cooking oil

How to Make Air Fryer Homemade Pop Tarts

Roll out the dough to less than an inch thick. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut your dough into 14 rectangles.

    pop tart sheets

Spread your cherry preserves on 1/2 the number of the rectangles you have cut. These would be the bottom pieces, so the plain rectangles will be the top pieces.

    jam over dough

Using the edge of your fork, gently press the tines into the edge of your pop tart, sealing the edges. If any of the filling squeezes out, just wipe it up so it will not burn when you bake them.

pressing the sides of the dough

Dip your finger into the water and lightly go around the edge of each of the rectangles covered with the preserves. Gently cover it with a top piece, making sure to line up the edges the best you can. Using the tip of a sharp knife, cut 3-5 small slits into the pop tart.

homemade pop tart in the air fryer

Preheat your air fryer at 350° for one minute. Spray your air fryer with cooking spray. Depending on the size of your air fryer, place as many pop tarts that will fit with plenty of room, so they are not touching. Set the air fryer to 350° for 11 minutes.

    baked pop tarts

I suggest checking them at 8 or 9 minutes to see how they look as some air fryers may cook differently. My sister has a different brand than I do and seems to cook a bit faster than mine. You want your pop tart to have a nice, light golden-brown color when they are done. Continue until all pop tarts are cooked.

    glazed pop tarts

Mix your powdered sugar, half and half and vanilla until smooth. Spread over your pop tarts. Decorate with your sprinkles and enjoy!
