You have probably never seen a treat quite like this Pennsylvania Dutch funny cake recipe. It features a soft vanilla cake, a rich chocolate sauce, and a flaky pie crust that all bake together in one pan. It sounds a little unusual, but that is exactly what makes this funny cake so good.

The chocolate sauce goes on top of the cake batter before baking. As the cake bakes, the chocolate slowly moves down through the batter and settles over the pie crust. The finished dessert has a tender vanilla layer on top, a gooey chocolate layer underneath, and a buttery crust around it all.
It looks like something from a bakery, but this Pennsylvania Dutch funny cake recipe is easy enough for a beginner baker. The ingredients are simple, the directions are straightforward, and the finished dessert always gets plenty of attention.
What you will learn:
- How to create the gooey chocolate bottom and soft cake top that make funny cake special
- Why the chocolate mixture should be poured over the batter instead of stirred in
- Common mistakes that can leave the cake too wet, too dry, or uneven
- How to store, freeze, and serve this classic Pennsylvania Dutch treat.
Key Takeaways
- A Pennsylvania Dutch funny cake is a unique, whimsical treat that features a soft vanilla cake baked inside a flaky pie crust with a hidden, gooey chocolate layer underneath.
- The “funny” aspect of the recipe occurs during baking, as the thin chocolate mixture poured over the batter naturally sinks to the bottom, creating a delicious two-layered dessert without manual stirring.
- This versatile dish bridges the gap between breakfast and dessert; it is traditionally enjoyed alongside morning coffee or served as an indulgent after-dinner treat with ice cream.
- Success depends on simple technique: avoid stirring the chocolate into the batter, use hot water for the chocolate layer, and be careful not to overbake to ensure the cake remains moist and tender.

Why Is Funny Cake Called Funny Cake?
Funny cake earns its whimsical name because the layers seem to switch places while the dessert bakes in the oven. When you prepare this Pennsylvania Dutch classic, you pour a rich chocolate mixture over the vanilla batter. During the baking process, the chocolate sinks through the cake to create a dense, fudgy layer on the bottom.
Beyond this magical movement, the name also reflects the unconventional nature of a cake baked inside a pie crust. This unique combination makes it difficult to label as either a traditional dessert or a breakfast cake. In the tradition of authentic Pennsylvania Dutch cooking, it is commonly enjoyed as a sweet morning treat with coffee, though it serves just as well as an after-dinner indulgence.
While this regional favorite is a staple in parts of Pennsylvania and surrounding areas, it remains a hidden gem to many others. Whether you consider it a breakfast staple or a pie-inspired dessert, this cake is a delicious and fun addition to your recipe collection.
Is Funny Cake a Dessert or a Breakfast Cake?
Whether you consider this treat a dessert or a breakfast cake often depends on the time of day. Because this recipe combines a buttery pie crust, a rich chocolate layer, and a moist cake top, it easily functions as both.
If you serve it after dinner, it serves as a decadent dessert that pairs perfectly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. However, throughout Pennsylvania Dutch country, it is just as common to enjoy a slice of funny cake as a breakfast cake. Much like a traditional coffee cake, crumb cake, or a sweet Danish, it is best enjoyed alongside a hot cup of coffee in the morning. Since the recipe is not overly ornate and requires no frosting, its simple, satisfying nature makes it just as appropriate for a morning meal as it is for an afternoon snack or a post-dinner treat.

Homemade or Store-Bought Pie Crust
When preparing this Pennsylvania Dutch classic, the choice of crust is entirely up to you. Whether you prefer a homemade crust or a convenient store-bought pie crust, both work beautifully for this recipe. If you decide to make your own, many traditional bakers swear by using vegetable shortening to achieve that signature flaky texture.
Regardless of your choice, there is no need to pre-bake the shell. Simply place your unbaked crust into the pie plate before adding your cake batter. If you are using frozen store-bought pie shells, it is best to keep them in their foil pans and set them on a baking sheet before filling. This not only makes them easier to transport to the oven but also helps catch any drips while the cake bakes.
For the cake layer itself, the original recipe calls for oil to maintain moisture. However, if you prefer a richer flavor and decide to substitute with unsalted butter, ensure it is softened properly so it incorporates smoothly into the batter.dds a rich, fudgy flavor that creates a unique and satisfying treat.

Ingredients for Funny Cake Pie
You can find the complete recipe and measurements below, but here is what you need:
- Sugar
- Vegetable oil
- Eggs
- All-purpose flour
- Baking powder
- Milk
- Vanilla extract
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Hot water
- Two unbaked pie shells
The cake batter is made with oil instead of butter, which helps keep the cake soft. The chocolate layer needs only sugar, cocoa powder, and hot water.

How to Make Amish Funny Cake
1. Prepare the oven and pie shells
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Place the unbaked pie shells in pie plates if they aren’t already in pans. Set the pie plates on a baking sheet. This makes transferring them to and from the oven much easier.

2. Mix the cake batter
Add the sugar, oil, and eggs to a large mixing bowl. Beat until everything is well combined.
Slowly add the flour, baking powder, milk, and vanilla. Beat the batter on medium speed for about 2 minutes. The batter should look smooth and pourable.
Divide the batter between the two unbaked pie shells.
3. Make the chocolate mixture
In a small bowl, combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and hot water. Stir until the cocoa and sugar are mixed into the water.
The mixture will be thin, and that is what you want. It needs to move through the cake batter during baking.
4. Add the chocolate
Pour the chocolate mixture over the cake batter in both pie shells. Pour slowly and swirl the chocolate lightly across the surface as you add it.
Don’t stir the chocolate into the batter. The layers form during baking, and stirring can prevent the chocolate from settling properly.
5. Bake
Bake at 350 degrees F for about 1 hour.
The cake should be set in the center, and the top should look lightly golden. Since ovens can bake differently, check the cakes near the end of the baking time. A toothpick inserted into the cake portion should come out mostly clean, but it may touch some of the chocolate layer.

6. Cool and serve
Let the funny cakes cool before slicing. The chocolate layer will be very hot when the pies first come out of the oven, and cooling gives it time to thicken.
Slice and serve at room temperature. You can enjoy it plain, or add a little whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Pour the chocolate mixture over top of cake batter. Swirl around the top as you pour it in. Do not mix it in. Just pour the chocolate and let it lay. This will let the chocolate layer sinks to the bottom of the cake.
Bake at 350 for 1 hour.
Let cool and enjoy.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Stirring in the chocolate
This is the biggest mistake people make with a funny cake pie recipe. The chocolate mixture goes over the cake batter, but it should not be mixed in.
The chocolate needs to stay separate so it can move down through the batter. Stirring can create a marbled cake instead of distinct cake and chocolate layers.
Using cold water
Hot water helps the cocoa and sugar dissolve. Cold water can leave the chocolate mixture lumpy and may not blend as smoothly.
Forgetting the baking sheet
Pie plates can be awkward to carry when they are filled with liquid batter. Make sure to place your pie plates on a baking sheet before filling and baking. This also helps catch any spills in the oven.
Cutting the cake too soon
The center continues to settle as the cake cools. If you cut it while it is still very hot, the chocolate layer may be loose and the cake may not slice neatly.
Overbaking
A funny cake should have a soft, moist cake layer. Baking it too long can make the cake layer dry and hard. Start checking around the one-hour mark, especially if your oven runs hot.
Filling the pie shells too high
Divide the batter evenly between the two shells and leave room for the cake to rise. If one shell gets much more batter than the other, the cakes may finish at different times.

Tips for This Funny Cake Recipe Dutch Bakers Love
- Use room-temperature eggs and milk if possible, as they blend into the batter more easily.
- Measure the flour by spooning it into a measuring cup and leveling the top. Too much flour can make the cake dense.
- Always use unsweetened cocoa powder rather than hot chocolate mix for the best flavor.
- Pour the chocolate mixture slowly so it spreads evenly across the top of the cake batter.
- Bake both pies on the same baking sheet for easier handling in and out of the oven.
- Let the pies cool completely before wrapping them for storage.
- For cleaner slices, use a sharp knife and wipe the blade clean between cuts.
This traditional Amish funny cake is simple to prepare, but the order of the steps is crucial. Mix your cake batter first, pour it into the crust, prepare the chocolate mixture separately, and add it last to ensure the signature layers form in your funny cake.
How to Store Funny Cake
Once your funny cake has cooled completely to room temperature, it is ready to be stored. To maintain its quality, wrap the pie tightly in plastic wrap to ensure the delicate cake layer stays moist. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight.
Your homemade funny cake will stay fresh and delicious for 3 to 5 days. After this window, the cake layer may begin to lose its soft texture and become firm.
If you find that a slice tastes a little dry after a few days, simply warm it in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Placing a damp paper towel over the slice while it warms is a helpful trick to rehydrate the crumb and restore the perfect consistency of your funny cake.
Can You Freeze Funny Cake?
Yes, you can certainly freeze a funny cake for 2 to 3 months without compromising its quality.
To prepare it for storage, allow your funny cake to cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, wrap the entire pie tightly in several layers of plastic wrap. For added protection against freezer burn, you can place the wrapped funny cake inside an airtight freezer container or a heavy-duty freezer bag.
When you are ready to enjoy your delicious homemade funny cake again, thaw it slowly overnight in the refrigerator. For the best texture and flavor, let the funny cake come to room temperature before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you can use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend as a substitute in this recipe. For the best results, ensure your flour blend includes xanthan gum to help replicate the structure of traditional wheat flour, as this is essential for supporting the cake’s rise and the movement of the chocolate layer.
Can I use one large pie crust?
This recipe is written to fill two standard pie shells. If you attempt to use one large crust, it likely will not hold all of the batter and chocolate mixture, and the baking time will need significant adjustment. Using two unbaked pie shells ensures the cake has enough room to rise properly during baking.
Can I use butter instead of oil?
While you can technically use butter, oil is the best choice for this recipe because it keeps the cake soft and moist. If you do choose to use butter, melted unsalted butter is generally preferred to maintain better control over the flavor, though it may result in a slightly different texture than the traditional version.
Does funny cake need frosting?
No. The chocolate layer provides plenty of sweetness and flavor, while the pie crust adds a nice buttery edge. If you want to serve this as a decadent dessert, feel free to add a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Why did my chocolate stay on top?
If the chocolate stays on top, the chocolate mixture may have been too thick, or the cake may need a bit more time in the oven. When preparing the chocolate layer, ensure you use hot water and precise measurements of granulated sugar as listed in the recipe. Most importantly, avoid stirring the chocolate mixture into the cake batter, as you want it to sink naturally during the baking process.
Why is my funny cake dry?
Overbaking is the most common reason for a dry cake. Check the cakes around the one hour mark and remove them from the oven as soon as the cake portion is set. Also, be careful when measuring your flour, as using too much can dry out the crumb of this Pennsylvania Dutch favorite.
What does funny cake taste like?
This unique treat tastes like a soft vanilla cake balanced by a rich, fudgy chocolate layer and a flaky pie crust. It is sweet, moist, and offers a delightful contrast of textures in every bite.

Is there any chance the image of the funny cake slice could be added to the Wikipedia commons in order to make an article about funny cake?

Coming from NE Amish area of PA decades past, I’ve made about a dozen Funny Cakes over my life but lost my German version which sounds much like this one and quite good.
There has to be sufficient cocoa to sugar and many recipes don’t allow enough eggs for a the fluffy cake portion. You FORGOT THE PIE PAN SIZE. 9″ or 8″? Would love to know where this info is at. Thank you for the generosity of posting!
Debi
I use a 9 inch. Thanks for pointing out that I forgot it.
