CARAMEL APPLE SHEET CAKE
I think one of my favorite things about sheet cake is that it doesn’t seem like you are indulging as much when you enjoy a slice of these types of cake. Maybe it’s just because it’s one layer? Maybe because it doesn’t look like a large two layer cake? Regardless of what it is, there is something really fantastic about sheet cake.
If these cakes really aren’t your thing, I have a few other cake recipes that you might really enjoy. For example, like my Gingerbread cake or my Oreo Icebox Cake. Of course, one of my family’s absolute Funnel Cake Recipe. Granted, this isn’t your normal “cake”, however, who doesn’t love noshing on a warm Funnel cake?
Before you get started on this delicious dessert, here are a few helpful tips and suggestions.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHEET CAKE AND REGULAR CAKE?
The difference is in what pans are used. For a regular cake, you will normally use two 9″ inch round pans. When making a sheet cake, you will use a long shallow type of pan.
WHAT IS A SHEET CAKE PAN?
A sheet cake pan is a long, rectangle, and short sided pan. These pans are also referred to as a jelly roll pan.
WHAT ARE THE BEST APPLES FOR BAKING?
Hands down, the best apples for baking are Granny Smith. They are tart and hold up well under heat.
WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE NEEDED TO MAKE A SHEET CAKE WITH APPLES AND CARAMEL?
- Flour – this must be all-purpose.
- Sugar – all great recipes use sugar.
- Cinnamon – this ingredient and apples go perfectly together.
- Unsalted sweet cream butter – all baking recipes should use unsalted butter.
- Shortening – you will use this instead of canola oil.
- Buttermilk – all great recipes use buttermilk.
- Baking soda – the ingredient that makes it rise.
- Eggs – these are the binding agent.
- Vanilla – make sure to use Pure Vanilla Extract.
- Green apples – make sure to use Granny Smith.
- Milk – this will be needed for the frosting.
