Melt the chocolate. Add the chocolate to the molds. Fill the molds. Pour out the excess. Make sure to get the chocolate up around the edges and sides of the mold. Place the molds in the freezer for a few minutes.
Gently remove the chocolate shells and place them on a baking sheet. Fill one side of the mold with the hot cocoa mix and marshmallows.
Add the 2 sides of the molds together. Use a warm plate to melt the chocolate on one side to help close the halves together. Using the back of a spoon or your finger, add chocolate along the seams to seal it. Then drizzle chocolate over the top of the ball.
Decorate the chocolate spheres with chocolate drizzle and green sprinkles.
To make the hot chocolate bombs, add one to the bottom of a large mug. Add hot milk over the top. The hot chocolate bomb will start to melt and then burst open.
Hint: Melt the chocolate using the microwave, in a microwave-safe bowl, or on the stove using the double boiler method.
🥄 Variations
- You can use different flavors of hot chocolate to create different flavor bombs. Try using white chocolate, dark chocolate, or even flavored chocolates like peppermint.
- Use flavored hot chocolate powder in the St. Patrick’s Hot Cocoa Bombs. Since Irish cream or mint is associated with St. Patrick’s Day, try using one of those flavored hot chocolate mix.
- Replace the mini marshmallows with lucky charms marshmallows.
- Instead of sprinkles, top the bombs with crushed green candy, edible gold glitter for a festive touch.
🍽️ What to Serve With St. Patrick’s Hot Cocoa Bombs
- If you are serving these fun treats as dessert, pair them with a delicious St. Patrick’s Day dinner, like Instant Pot Corned Beef and Cabbage with Guinness, Irish Ale Potato Cheddar Soup, Irish Chicken and Dumplings Stew or Irish Flag Parfait – Fruit and Yogurt Parfait
- Decorate the mug with gold or green sanding sugar.
🍶 Storing
Store the St. Patrick’s Hot Cocoa Bombs in an airtight container for up to two weeks. I like to place each in a cupcake liner. The bombs can be stored at room temperature unless it is warm. If it is warm, store them in the refrigerator so the chocolate does not melt.
Freezer Storage: The green hot chocolate bombs can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. Make sure to wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before freezing.
Reheat: To make a cup of hot chocolate, place the bomb in a mug and pour 8 ounces of milk, over it until it melts and bursts open. Top with additional marshmallows.
💭Tip for Making the Perfect St. Patrick’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs
- When you are melting the chocolate, be sure to watch it carefully so it does not burn. Stir often and keep the heat low.
- Make sure to use a high-quality bar of chocolate for the best results.
- If the chocolate is too hot, it will not set properly and will be too soft when trying to close the bomb together.
- Make sure to get the chocolate up around the edges of the cavities of the mold. This is important so that when you put the 2 sides together it will form a perfect ball.
