We love dirt pudding and pudding parfaits. I have this incredible worms in dirt bark that takes the idea of dirt pudding crawling with worms and turns it into a bark recipe. I also have 2 other types of Halloween pudding parfaits, one is an adult pudding cup with creepy Zombie-fied alcohol-soaked gummy bears hands and a graveyard pudding cup that would be a great addition to this pudding parfait on any Halloween party table.
What is Dirt Pudding
Dirt pudding, also called dirt cake sometimes, is a dessert that consists of pudding, cookies or brownies, and candy. It is usually made to look like dirt, hence the name.
There are many different ways to make dirt pudding. Some people use Oreos, while others use graham crackers. Pudding can be any flavor, but chocolate and vanilla are the most popular.
Candy is usually added to the top of the pudding to resemble worms or bugs. This can be done with gummy worms, candy corn, chocolate chips, or any other type of candy.
Dirt pudding is a fun and easy dessert to make for any Halloween party. It is also a great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen.
How does this taste?
It is pudding and crushed brownies, topped with candy. Do I really need to say more?
Is the recipe really that easy?
For the longest time, I was intimidated by making dirt pudding. I was convinced I was hard. After making it the first time, this is one of the easiest recipes I have ever made. The kids love to help. My 13 year old makes it by herself.
Tips for making your Dirt Pudding Perfect
1. I am using brownies but you can also use a variety of cookies. I like to use Oreos, graham crackers, and even chocolate chip cookies. You can really use any type of cookie you like.
2. Be creative with your toppings. Gummy worms are the classic topping, but you can get creative and use candy corn, chocolate chips, or any other type of candy. I love using different Halloween decorations.
3. Let the kids help. This is a great recipe to get the kids involved in the kitchen. They will love crushing the brownies and adding the toppings. Not to mention, they love eating the leftovers.
4. Make it your own. This is an easy dirt pudding recipe that is very versatile. Feel free to change up the flavors and toppings to suit your taste.
Variations to Halloween Chocolate Dirt Pudding
There are a lot of variations to Oreo dirt pudding. I am decorating this one using a small Halloween candy, but similar to the graveyard pudding, you can use Peeps to decorate or creepy zombie hands like the adult pudding cup. There are so many other ways to add variations to dirt pudding. You can use any type of candy, cookie, or even cake.
If you want to get really creative, you can use different colors of pudding to make a rainbow dirt pudding. You can also add food coloring to the pudding to make it any color you want.
Some people like to make dirt pudding with vanilla pudding or use different chocolate sandwich cookies or change it up with something like Golden Oreos or graham crackers to make it look like sand.

Can I make Dirt Pudding Recipe ahead of time or do I have to prepare it on Halloween night?
You can make the pudding and brownies ahead of time. Gummy candies can be added when you make it but if you are using any other type of candy, anything that can get soggy, I would wait until you are ready to serve to add the candy on the Oreo dirt cake.
How to Make it Vegan
Technically, most of the instant puddings are already vegan. So as you go to make the pudding, you can use vegan, dairy free versions of milk. Almond milk, soy milk, and coconut milk can be used to make the pudding. In addition, I am using Cool Whip and while there is no vegan version of it, you can make coconut cream whipped cream and use it in place of the Cool Whip Lastly, you need vegan brownies. There are lots of ways to make vegan brownies, so this shouldn’t be a problem.
How long does it take pudding to set?
The pudding needs about 2 hours to set but it is best when it sits overnight. If you try to eat it before it is set, it will be runny.
Is there a difference between pudding mix and vanilla instant pudding?
Yes, there is a difference between pudding mix and vanilla instant pudding. Pudding mix is a powder that you add milk to and it makes pudding. Vanilla instant pudding is already mixed and all you have to do is add milk and it will thicken up.
Do I need to use Cool Whip?
No, you don’t need to use Cool Whip but it does make the pudding taste better. If you don’t want to use Cool Whip, you can make your own whipped cream or use a dairy-free whip topping.
Why is My Pudding Runny
If your pudding is runny, it is most likely because you used too much milk. When making the pudding, make sure to follow the instructions on the box and only use the amount of milk that is called for.
Another reason your pudding could be runny is that you didn’t let it set long enough. The pudding needs about 2 hours to set but it is best when it sits overnight. If you try to eat it before it is set, it will be runny.
What is the Best Way to Crush the Cookies
There are a few different ways that you can crush the cookies. You can use a food processor, a blender, or even put them in a ziplock bag and use a rolling pin to crush them. I like to use a food processor because it is the quickest and easiest way to get the cookies crushed.
How to Display The Halloween Dirt Pudding
This pudding can be made in a trifle dish, clear bowls, or even plastic cups. I like to use clear containers so you can see all the layers. This pudding is also great for a Halloween buffet because it can be made ahead of time and it can sit out for about 2 hours before needing to be placed back in the refrigerator.
What are some other ways to decorate the pudding?
There are lots of ways that you can decorate the pudding. You can use gummy worms, candy eyeballs, Halloween sprinkles, or even crushed-up candy bars. Be creative and have fun with it!
